Orange County College Basketball : Point Loma Nazarene Holds Off SCC for 68-61 Victory

Point Loma Nazarene College survived a late challenge from visiting Southern California College to win its Golden State Athletic Conference opener, 68-61, Tuesday.

SCC (1-1, 11-4), which had trailed, 33-19, at the half, rallied in the game’s closing minutes to cut Point Loma’s lead to 62-61 with 50 seconds remaining. The Vanguards then fouled Point Loma’s Greg Lanthier, but Lanthier sank both of his free throws and SCC was unable to score on its subsequent possession.

Trailing, 64-61, SCC fouled Clayton Williams, who made two free throws and stole the ball as the Vanguards brought it in bounds. He scored the game’s final basket on a layup. Williams finished the game with 17 points and 18 rebounds.

Dewayne Burton led Point Loma (11-3) with 18 points and 14 rebounds. Steve Bruce scored 17 points for the Crusaders.

In women’s action:

Southern California College 68, Point Loma Nazarene 58--Dolores Effinger scored 24 points and had 9 rebounds to lead the Vanguards to the Golden State Athletic Conference win at Point Loma Nazarene.

Southern California (1-1, 7-9) took a 48-38 lead in the first half behind the shooting of Effinger and Lisa Terry, who finished with 22 points. Laura Mars had 20 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Crusaders (6-6).
