Monrovia : Parking Compromise OKd

Share

The yearlong controversy over on-street parking came to an end when the City Council unanimously approved an ordinance restricting parking to alternate sides of the street one day a week between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m.

In a special election last November, the voters defeated a binding measure that would have prohibited overnight parking but approved an advisory measure providing for the alternate-side restriction.

The council had hesitated to enact a compromise measure, designed to facilitate street cleaning, because of the number and cost of street signs. However, the city has received approval from Santa Anita Municipal Court to install larger but fewer signs than originally anticipated. About 1,500 signs will be needed, at a cost of $50,000.

The program will be phased in during the next few months as the signs are prepared and installed.
