NHL Roundup : Jets Defeat Devils, 5-4, Sweep Trip

Share

Defenseman Randy Carlyle scored on a power play halfway through the final period Friday night at East Rutherford, N.J., to give the Winnipeg Jets a 5-4 victory over the New Jersey Devils and a sweep of their four-game trip.

Dale Hawerchuk set up Carlyle for the winning goal. Earlier, Hawerchuk scored his 27th goal and assisted on another as the Jets rallied from a 2-0 deficit.

The Jets have won five in a row and are only one point behind Calgary in the fight for second place in the Smythe Division.

The winning goalie in all five has been Daniel Bethiaume, the 20-year-old rookie. He won five starts in a row after joining the Jets in November, then went into a slump and was winless in his next five.

He was the backup Jan. 9 when Pokey Reddick twisted his knee and had to come out after 13 minutes. Reddick had been hot, but Bethiaume has been an adequate sub.

He turned in 47 scoreless minutes in a 3-0 win over Hartford when Reddick was hurt. He has been No. 1 in the four in a row on the road, too.

Vancouver 9, Calgary 5--Nine players scored--including Stan Smyl on a third-period penalty shot--in the Canucks’ rout of the Flames at Vancouver.

While winning for only the 13th time in 45 games, the Canucks scored six goals in the first period to set a club record.

Vancouver also got goals from Petri Skriko, Dan Hodgson, Tony Tanti, Rich Sutter, Barry Pederson, Jim Sandlak, Garth Butcher and Jim Benning.
