Eamonn Coghlan, competing in his first race since he was injured in a dog attack last month, outran Ray Flynn to win the mile in the Kodak Invitational track and field meet at Johnson City, Tenn.
Coghlan, of Ireland, was timed in 3 minutes 56.59 seconds. He overtook Flynn with three-quarters of a lap left. Flynn, a native of Ireland who lives in Johnson City, finished in 3:57.19. Ross Donoghue of Villanova was third in 3:58.06.
Coghlan, who holds the world record in the mile at 3:49.79, suffered a broken left hand and tissue damage in his right calf when he was attacked by a dog while training Dec. 28 in Dublin, Ireland.
Antonio McKay of Atlanta won the 440-yard dash in 45.60 seconds. He holds the world indoor best of 45.44, which he set in the same meet last year.
Butch Reynolds of Ohio State set a world indoor record in the 600-yard run of 1 minute 06.87 seconds, breaking the mark of 1:07.6 set in 1970 by Martin McGrady in New York. Chip Jenkins of the Atlantic Coast Track Club was second in 1:07.51.
Brad Sullivan of North Carolina won the 60-yard dash in 6.20.
