Australian Open Tennis : Lendl Wins but, on the Surface, He Isn’t Happy

No. 1-seeded Ivan Lendl of Czechoslovakia defeated Matt Anger, 6-4, 6-2, 6-7, 6-2, Saturday in the third round of the $1.65-million Australian Open tennis championahips. Then he blasted the Kooyong court.

“It reminds me of the parking lot where my golf ball ends after a tee shot,” Lendl said. “I was thinking of bringing my pitching wedge and trying some shots. It could help me when I play golf.”

Lendl, who led 5-1 in the third-set tiebreaker before Anger won six straight points to take the set, will meet NCAA champion Dan Goldie in the fourth round.

Goldie, ranked 117th in the world, upset 16th-seeded Ramesh Krishnan of India, 3-6, 7-5, 6-7, 6-2, 6-2, and the 23-year-old Stanford economics graduate is looking forward to facing Lendl.

“Grass is definitely not Lendl’s best surface, and I think it’s one of my best surfaces,” said Goldie, who finished off Krishnan by serving three aces in the final game of the match.

“I’ll just go out there and try and have some fun and do my best.”

Also advancing Saturday were No. 2-seeded Boris Becker of West Germany and No. 4-seeded Stefan Edberg of Sweden.

Becker defeated Slobodan Zivojinovic of Yugoslavia, 6-3, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, in the first career meeting between the two friends and doubles partners. His next opponent will be Wally Masur of Australia, who struggled past Christo Van Rensburg of South Africa, 6-3, 1-6, 7-5, 4-6, 6-0.

Edberg, the defending champion, moved into the fourth round with a 6-4, 6-3, 6-1 victory over John Frawley of Australia.

In women’s play, No. 4-seeded Helena Sukova of Czechoslovakia and No. 5 Claudia Kohde-Kilsch of West Germany were third-round winners.

Sukova routed Christiane Jolissaint of Switzerland, 6-1, 6-2, and Kohde-Kilsch ousted Tina Mochizuki, 6-2, 6-2.

In Saturday’s lone upset, Australian Liz Smylie ousted No. 9 Robin White, 6-1, 6-2.
