San Diego College Basketball : UCSD Defeats Point Loma, 90-74

UC San Diego’s John Saintignon made 10 of 14 shots from the floor, including both of his three-point shots, to lead the Tritons to a 90-74 victory Saturday night over visiting Point Loma Nazarene College.

Saintignon and teammate Brian Backens each scored 26 points as UCSD improved its record to 13-5.

Point Loma (12-4) fell behind early and trailed, 39-29, at the half. The team was led by Steve Bruce’s 24 points. Greg Lanthier added 17 points and 8 rebounds. UCSD’s Greg Kamansky went 8 for 8 at the free-throw line, where he scored half of his 16 points.

In San Diego college women’s basketball:

University of San Diego 56, Nevada-Reno 54--Karen Skemp hit a three-point shot at the buzzer to bring USD as close as it ever got as the visiting Toreros lost their first West Coast Athletic Conference game of the season. Denise Harris had 15 points and Lisa Beffis had 13 to lead Nevada-Reno (6-10). USD was led by Kelly Barons with 12 and Skemp with 11.

Point Loma Nazarene 67, La Verne 54--Laura Mars scored 28 points to help host Point Loma Nazarene College improve its record to 7-6 and avenge a 49-47 loss earlier this season at La Verne. La Verne was led by Pam Walker with 19 points. Shannon Anderson also had 19 points and got 10 rebounds for Point Loma.
