A 26-year-old Utah man was in critical condition Monday after he was pinned for nearly eight hours behind the steering wheel of his pickup truck, which ran off a firebreak road and overturned near Thousand Oaks, the California Highway Patrol said.

The man, Alexander Carrillo of Provo, was drinking at a bar in the area with Kelly Atwood, 23, of Moorpark, when they decided to go “off-roading,” Officer S. Griffin said. The accident occurred about 1:30 a.m. Monday in a remote area at Santa Rosa and Hill Canyon Roads, Griffin said.

Atwood, who received only minor injuries, was ejected from the truck when it rolled over, Ventura County fire spokeswoman Paula Aliano said. Four hours after the accident, Atwood reached a county sewage treatment plant that was closed, broke a window and called authorities, Aliano said.

Rescuers did not find the overturned truck until about 8 a.m., and it took about another hour to extricate Carrillo, she said.

Carrillo underwent surgery at Los Robles Regional Medical Center in Thousand Oaks for undisclosed injuries.
