Michael Tait’s 18-footer from the right corner with four seconds remaining enabled 10th-ranked Clemson to remain unbeaten with a 67-66 Atlantic Coast Conference victory over Georgia Tech Tuesday night at Atlanta.

It was the 17th consecutive victory this season for the Tigers, one of only three unbeaten Division I teams. It also lifted the Tigers to 4-0 in the ACC, their best conference start ever.

Clemson took control for the final time when Georgia Tech’s Bruce Dalrymple was called for charging with 49 seconds to go, and, after running down the shot clock, Tait hit the game-winner just before the 45-second shot clock expired.

Tech tried a long pass on the final play, but it was intercepted by Clemson’s Horace Grant.

The loss snapped a two-game winning streak for Tech (9-5, 1-2).

Louisville 84, Virginia Tech 62--The Cardinals put on a dunking clinic against Metro Conference foe Virginia Tech at Louisville, Ky., but it was the defense Coach Denny Crum was bragging about.

“The defense creates the easy shots,” Crum said. “The defense creates your fast break--nothing else.”

Louisville had 13 steals--including three midway through the second period during a 9-0 spurt that settled the game--and the Hokies made just 26 of 74 field goals for 35.1%.

Herbert Crook led Louisville with 22 points, 10 rebounds and four steals. Pervis Ellison had a career-high 18 rebounds and 16 points.

Louisville raised its record to 9-8, 2-1; Virginia Tech is 6-10, 2-2.

Boston College 79, Seton Hall 75--Dana Barros scored 19 of his 30 points in the second half as Boston College rallied to upset Seton Hall in a Big East game at East Rutherford, N.J.

Boston College is 8-7 overall and 1-4 in the Big East. Seton Hall is 11-5 and 2-5.

Boston College hung on in a frantic final minute, converting eight of nine free throws--four each by Barros and Ted Kelley.

Kansas 71, Missouri 70--Junior forward Chris Piper sank the front end of a one-and-one with five seconds remaining, and Danny Manning rebounded his missed shot as the Jayhawks defeated the Tigers for their 42nd straight victory at Allen Field House in Lawrence, Kan.

The victory, which raised the Jayhawks’ record to 3-1 in the Big Eight and 11-5 overall, spoiled Missouri’s bid for its 1,000th win as well as Coach Norm Stewart’s 52nd birthday. The Tigers fell to 2-1 and 12-7.

In a women’s game:

UCLA 72, Loyola Marymount 45--The Bruins built a 26-point halftime lead and coasted past the Lions in a nonconference game at Pauley Pavilion.

The Bruins (12-4) led the Lions, 40-14, at the half. Forward Althea Ford had a game-high 16 points for UCLA. Chris Conolly led Loyola (4-15) with 10 points.
