San Pedro : ‘Sunken City’ to Be Fenced
A Los Angeles City Council committee has recommended that $140,000 be spent to erect a wrought-iron fence around “Sunken City,” a geologically unstable area popular with late-night revelers who irritate neighbors.
By a 2-0 vote, the Finance and Revenue Committee voted to appropriate funds for the fence, which would seal off the city-owned area from Pacific Avenue on the east to Point Fermin Park on the west. The City Council is expected to approve the allocation soon.
Mario Juravich, an aide to Councilwoman Joan Milke Flores, said a gate would allow visitors during the day but be locked at night.
The 10-acre site in the Point Fermin landslide area has been closed to the public for 50 years. Although no-trespassing signs have been posted and a chain-link fence surrounds the area, it has become a late-night and early-morning gathering place where teen-agers and gang members from all parts of the South Bay listen to music and drink.
Although the wrought-iron fence will be harder to break through, it probably will not be “100% foolproof” in keeping trespassers out, Juravich said.
Construction will not begin for at least 60 days while officials determine whether the work has to be put out to bid.
