The Environmental Protection Agency proposed federal cleanup aid under the Superfund program for another 64 toxic waste dumps in 24 states. Two California sites were included: the Southern California Edison Co. pole yard in Visalia and the Watkins-Johnson Co. plant in Scotts Valley. The action brings the number of sites on the agency’s priority list to 951, consisting of 703 sites that have been formally designated for aid and 248 still in the status of proposed sites. The Superfund dump cleanup program provides 90% of the cleanup cost for sites on the list, with states picking up the remaining share.
