Maureen Reagan, the President’s daughter, was elected today co-chairman of the Republican National Committee despite the reservations of some conservative party members.

Some party regulars said the No. 2 job should have gone to a woman who has worked longer in the party. They said President Reagan’s influence was the sole reason for her election to the prestigious job.

Maureen Reagan is a supporter of the equal rights amendment and of comparable-worth pay for women, positions that differ from those of her more conservative father.

After her election to the No. 2 party post, Maureen Reagan said she wants to attract more young people to the GOP “to leave our mark on this party and the American political process well into the next decade.”

Frank Fahrenkopf was reelected to an unprecedented third term as party chairman.
