Wearin’ o’ the green

Barbara Hershey is one actress who already has her St. Patrick’s Day outfit. She tried it out for a dinner date with Randy Newman the other night. Listen spied the couple at 72 Market Street, the Venice restaurant, and noted Hershey’s jacket was as green as shamrocks, and her long, knife-pleated skirt was the color of the Erin Isle. Newman wasn’t showing his colors. He wore brown tweed.

All Put Together

Audrey Hepburn was shopping for earrings at the Kenneth Jay Lane jewelry boutique on Rodeo Drive, and Michael McDonald of the store tells Listen: “She was dressed incredibly.” So what else is new? McDonald says Hepburn’s put-together outfit included an olive-green skirt to the knee, a burgundy-colored turtleneck sweater and flat-heeled, burgundy reptile loafers. Over it all, she wore an olive-green cape lined in burgundy. Something of a regular at the boutique, Hepburn invariably buys clear, rhinestone jewelry, McDonald says, and she has a special affection for earrings. This trip, she chose rhinestone button-style studs, he says.

Earmarked for Rita

Rita Moreno needed some earrings for her turquoise, ‘40s-style dress with the bugle-bead fringe. So she put it over her arm and headed for the studio of jewelry designer Deanna Hamro. It wasn’t the first time. Hamro says Moreno has been a steady customer since they met at I. Magnin the day the star walked in wearing her jogging suit and eyeglasses. (The better to see with, my dear.) Hamro says Moreno bought the big, bow-shaped crystal earrings. And for good luck, she added a pair of flower-shaped clip-ons the same color as the dress.

Quick-Change Artist

What does Meg Tilly wear when she’s not in that nun’s habit, that lady-cop outfit or any of the other costumes she’s been seen in on screen? Glad you asked. Listen spied the police rookie of “Off Beat” looking very offbeat while ambling through the real-life Brentwood Country Mart. That day she must have been feeling Hawaiian. Listen noticed that her matching tank top and long, skinny skirt were a melon-colored tropical flower print. Or was that a costume?

No-Change Artist

Lily Tomlin’s Sunday afternoon performance of “The Search for Signs of Intelligent Life in the Universe” was jam-packed with beautiful people, beautifully dressed. Among the stars Listen spotted were Walter Matthau, Veronique and Gregory Peck, Ed Asner and Maureen Stapleton. Tomlin, of course, wears only one outfit through the whole show--a dark silk blouse and slacks. She jokingly tells the audience, at the start of the second act, that she’s not really wearing the same clothes as before--it’s just that she owns two of the exact same ensembles.

Picking a Winner

Flipping though Elle magazine’s February issue, Listen spotted an Yves Saint Laurent announcement of a contest to pick the girl who’ll model in the designer’s perfume and cosmetics ads for two years. The winner, the ad says, will be Saint Laurent’s “ambassador of beauty and perfection in the whole world.” She must have “a clear complexion and skin of exceptional quality.” She must submit four photos, one full length and three close-ups: a profile, a full face with hair loose and a full face with hair pulled back. Judges from French Elle and the cosmetics company will pick the winner. Send entries to Odile Sarron, 6 rue Ancelle, 92525 Neuilly, France, before Feb. 15.

Quotable Quote

Listen’s quote of the week: “Fashion is a form of tyranny as well as a sign of boredom, and unfashionableness may be a sign of disappointment,” from Richard Gilman’s new book, “Faith, Sex, Mystery.”
