L.A. Police Implementing Jury Proposals
Most of the recommendations by the Los Angeles County Grand Jury to improve Los Angeles Police Department operations are being implemented and the problems resolved, a City Council committee reported Friday.
Councilman Hal Bernson, chairman of the Police, Fire and Public Safety Committee, said many of the grand jury suggestions, which were submitted last year after a review of LAPD operations, already have been acted upon by the department.
“It was indicated that the Police Department has either resolved or is in the process of resolving all the deficiencies and/or implementing recommendations noted by the grand jury,” Bernson said in presenting a city administrative officer report to the council.
Among the 31 recommendations offered by the 1985-86 grand jury were suggestions to repair and improve the city’s police facilities including jails, to establish a computerized gang tracking system and to step up educational and community programs aimed at combatting drugs and gang violence.
The department has already enacted some of those recommendations, according to the CAO. Cited were repairs or pending work in the Van Nuys, Hollywood, West Valley and Wilshire stations as well as plans to develop a computer system to help track gangs and additional anti-drug and anti-gang programs.
