Canal Boat Memories

Share

Luree Miller’s Dec. 7 article caught my eyes with the dateline: Cercy-La-Tour, and memories of its market day. In August, 1979, my husband and I were joined by another couple for our third and their first canal boat trip. Our 35-foot boat had two cabins, and in between, the galley, shower, etc. In ’79 the Canal de Nivernais (France) was not as well-maintained as other canals we had been on. From the article I assume maintenance of towpath, etc., must have improved a bit. This year we hope to take our tenth canal trip.

In England we book through British Waterways Board, Hire Cruise Booking Office, Chester Road, Nantwich, Cheshire CW5 8LB. In France through Ligne Bleue, Le Grand Bassin, B.P. 21, 11400 Castelnaudary. Hoseason (mentioned in the Luree article) has a U.S. representative: Skipper Travel Service, 210 California Ave., P.O. Box 11277, Palo Alto, Calif. 94306, phone (415) 321-5658.
