Ten students at Mills College in Oakland erected a shantytown to protest the school’s investments in companies doing business with South Africa. One of the protesters, sophomore Gretchen Lieb, said students at the private women’s college were “shocked” to discover the size of those investments. Donna Howard, Mills vice president of institutional advancement, said about $8 million of the school’s $54-million endowment is invested in companies linked to South Africa.
