Two members of the New York Mets will go on trial today on charges of assaulting two off-duty policemen in Houston.
Jury selection for the trial of pitcher Ron Darling and second baseman Tim Teufel was scheduled for 9 a.m. before District Judge Joe Kegans. Houston attorney Dick DeGuerin, who is representing the Mets, said, “If there’s time, we’ll begin the trial (Monday).”
Darling and Teufel were indicted on felony assault charges, but the Houston Chronicle reported Saturday that the charge against Darling had been reduced to a misdemeanor. Because of a gag order by Kegans, DeGuerin would not comment.
Both players have pleaded innocent and will be present. If convicted, Darling and Teufel could be sentenced to 10 years in prison and fined $5,000.
Pitchers Bob Ojeda and Rick Aguilera face misdemeanor charges of trying to help their teammates avoid arrest. Their trial has not been scheduled.
