A young man who claims he is nearly blind from glaucoma was arrested on suspicion of killing one man and wounding another during a robbery attempt in South-Central Los Angeles, police said.
Martin Ramirez, 22, was arrested after witnesses identified him as one of two robbers who confronted two men leaving a market in the 4100 block of South Hoover Avenue, Detective Richard Hoffman said. Ramirez and the second man allegedly tried to rob Guillermo Medrano and Isidro Torres, both 22, Hoffman said.
Ramirez allegedly opened fire with a pistol, striking both men. Medrano died at the scene and Torres was hospitalized in stable condition. The second suspect escaped with the gun. Officers took Ramirez to a police medical facility, where he was treated for glaucoma, Hoffman said. Ramirez told doctors he was blind in one eye and nearly blind in the other.
