Atty. Gen. Edwin Meese III recently told a group of law clerks that he has read Playboy and Penthouse and doesn’t consider them obscene, according to several of the clerks. Last summer, a federal judge ordered Meese’s Commission on Pornography to rescind a letter sent to stores in an effort to discourage them from selling Playboy and Penthouse. The letter was soliciting responses to claims that they sold pornography. Justice Department spokesman Terry Eastland confirmed the substance of Meese’s remarks to the law clerks.
