Police Department to Hold Job Fair in Effort to Recruit More Officers

The Los Angeles Police Department will hold a job fair Saturday in an effort to recruit more officers, Deputy Chief William Rathburn said Tuesday.

He said those interested in law-enforcement careers should visit the Police Academy, 1880 N. Academy Road, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday to see self-defense demonstrations and talk to officers assigned to the mounted patrol, bomb squad, the special weapons and tactics team and anti-gang and anti-drug units.

There will be seminars for prospective applicants on how to prepare for the written and oral entrance examinations and on the physical requirements.

“We want top-notch people, who don’t use drugs, who haven’t been arrested for serious crimes, who are honest and sincere and who want to help other people in their community,” Rathburn said.

“We feel we offer a very attractive salary now,” he said. “With two years of college, someone can start at $32,500 a year. With a (general equivalency diploma), one can start at a little over $29,000.”

The department, he stressed, “is very interested in hiring as many women and minorities as possible, so we urge them to attend.” Applicants must be 21 or older.
