C&NW; is negotiating to buy 300 miles of track.
L. B. Foster Co. owns the lines being sought by Chicago & North Western in Michigan and Wisconsin. If a final deal is struck, the purchase price will be more than $50 million. The track has been up for sale for about a year. Chicago & North Western altogether operates 6,800 miles of track.
