Hype and Hoopla of the Super Bowl

Share

After watching CBS’s coverage of Super Bowl XXI, I found an interesting contradiction between the network and the National Football League.

The NFL is making a truly worthy effort in educating its viewers of the personal and professional effects of substance abuse. Note that substance abuse, according to the medical experts, includes alcohol as well as legal and illegal drugs. This is where to contradiction occurs.

In between the passes and tackles, we heard such former sports greats as Mercury Morris of the Miami Dolphins give his testimonial of the causes and effects of his substance abuse. Immediately following was an advertisement for a beer, which according to the ad, will give you the most out of life.

With the amount of young, impressionable people watching their heroes on television; young people who do not understand that the NFL can not decide who CBS’s sponsors should and should not be, it becomes a confusing world of mixed messages; messages like “Do as I say . . . not as I do”.
