Cey Traded to the A’s for Quinones

The Oakland A’s traded infielder Luis Quinones to the Chicago Cubs Friday for third baseman Ron Cey, who is expected to share the designated hitter’s duties with Reggie Jackson.

Cey played the past four years for the Cubs after spending 10 years with the Dodgers. Cey has 312 career home runs and 1,128 RBIs.

Cey, 38, hit .273 with 13 homers and 36 RBIs in 97 games last year.

Sandy Alderson, Oakland’s vice president for baseball operations, said: “Ron is a proven right-handed hitter, and that’s just what we needed. He may share the designated hitter’s role with Reggie Jackson, but he also gives us flexibility at third base.”

Cey is guaranteed $950,000 in 1987 as final payment on the five-year contract he signed with the Cubs in 1983. No details were released on how the two clubs are splitting the payment.

The slick-fielding Quinones, 24, was acquired by the A’s in December after spending the 1986 season with the San Francisco Giants, hitting .179 with no homers and 11 RBIs in 71 games.
