J.D. Sam, the sixth-ranked jockey at Delta Downs in Louisiana, died when his mount broke a leg, starting a three-horse pile-up.
Sam, 33, was on the filly Daisy when she broke down after the first quarter-mile of a 4 1/2-furlong race Friday night, track officials said Saturday.
Sam died shortly after arrival at a hospital in Vinton, La. He is survived by his wife, Betty, and three children.
