Bell : 3 Portable Classrooms OKd

The Bell City Council has approved a request by the Los Angeles Unified School District to place three more portable classrooms on a faculty parking lot at overcrowded Bell High School. Although concern was expressed that parking may spill over onto nearby residential streets, the request was approved after school officials assured council members that the buildings will not remain after August, 1991.

The three classrooms will be added to four temporary structures already on the lot, and will shrink the parking lot from the current 72 parking stalls to 62.

The council’s action, which modifies a previous conditional-use permit granted to the district, specifies that removal of the buildings must take place by January, 1992, and the lot must be restored to its original 116 parking spaces.

“I think that’s a happy compromise,” said Councilman Jay B. Price, who noted that the city stipulated other conditions, including having the district find additional off-street parking for its staff.

The school district went to the council two years ago to allow four bungalows on the faculty parking lot. The council then approved a conditional-use permit, which cut the lot from 116 to 72 spaces.

The district currently leases off-street parking from the Bell Friends Church, which is almost 10 blocks away.
