Ex-UPI Chief McCrohon to Be Herald Editor

Maxwell McCrohon, former president and editor-in-chief of United Press International, has been named editor of the Los Angeles Herald Examiner, the newspaper said Wednesday.

McCrohon, 57, who joined UPI in 1983, left the news service late last year after serving first as editor-in-chief and then as president. Since leaving UPI, he has been working as a consultant with the Hearst Corp., owner of the Herald Examiner.

“They asked me if I would come aboard,” McCrohon said.

McCrohon said his consulting work focused on how to improve the Herald Examiner. He declined to say what he intends to do with the newspaper, but added that he plans to stay at the newspaper for about six months before returning to his consulting practice.

Before joining UPI, McCrohon was vice president-news for Tribune Co. of Chicago, parent company of the Chicago Tribune and other newspapers and several television stations.

McCrohon replaces acting Herald Examiner editor John P. Lindsay, who will become projects editor for View, Calendar and the special sections of The Times. (See story in Part V, Page 1.)
