Laguna Beach has its scenic shoreline. San Francisco sports the Golden Gate Bridge. And now the City of Stanton, population 28,000, is holding a contest to adopt a new city seal and motto.

“We’re getting tired of ‘Stanton: Crossroads to Vacation Land’ which is the old unofficial motto,”’ said City Manager Jim Buell.

Incorporated as a city in 1956, Stanton wants to update its old depiction of the former City Hall on the city’s seal with something contemporary.

The old motto refers to the city’s geographic “crossroads” to Disneyland and Knott’s Berry Farm. But the appellation “makes it seem that we’re inviting people to drive through and not stop,” Buell said.

“We also want to build a stronger community image by changing out city motto,” Buell said.

The judging panel will consist of community residents and not city staff or elected officials.

Entries do not have to be professionally drawn but must be submitted to City Hall by 5 p.m. March 10. The winner of each contest will receive a $50 savings bond.
