San Diego Roundup : Hall of Champions Names Gwynn, Petranoff ’86 Stars

Padre right fielder Tony Gwynn and Tom Petranoff, a javelin thrower from Oceanside, have been selected by the San Diego Hall of Champions as its 1986 professional and amateur Stars of the Year.

Gwynn and Petranoff will receive their awards at the 41st annual “Salute to the Champions” dinner Feb. 25 at the Town and Country Convention Center in Mission Valley.

Also to be honored at the dinner will be former Charger coaches Sid Gillman and Don Coryell and former San Diego State and Cleveland Brown quarterback Brian Sipe, all of whom have been selected to join 63 other San Diego sports figures in the Breitbard Hall of Fame.

The dinner honors San Diego’s top athletes and teams for outstanding achievements. For ticket information call the Hall of Champions at 234-2544.

The 16th annual San Diego Intercollegiate Invitational Tennis Tournament begins next Thursday and runs through Feb. 14 at the University of San Diego and San Diego State University’s West Courts.

SDSU, USD, United States International University and UC San Diego, along with 12 other schools from the West Coast will compete in the three-day event. Admission is free.

Former President Gerald Ford, Bob Hope, Dinah Shore and Padre first baseman Steve Garvey head the list for Wednesday’s Celebrity Pro-Am of the 1987 Shearson Lehman Brothers Andy Williams Open.

The Celebrity Pro-Am will be played on both the North and South golf courses at Torrey Pines. Some 400 participants are expected for the event, which precedes the four-day $500,000 professional tournament.

David Gryll, a silver medalist as a member of the 1984 U.S. Olympic cycling team, has been appointed coaching director of the San Diego Velodrome Association.

Gryll, who was recently certified by the U.S. Cycling Federation through the American Coach Effectiveness Program, will work with potential riders and competition cyclists.

Gryll won his Olympic medal in team pursuit. He also won two gold medals in the 1983 World Pan Am games.
