2 Pedestrians Killed as Driver Loses Control
Two pedestrians were killed by an out-of-control car in Cardiff and a third narrowly escaped injury, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Daniel McAllister, 19, of San Diego died at the scene. The accident occurred about 10 p.m. Saturday in the 2500 block of Old Highway 101, CHP spokeswoman Debbie Russell said.
Michael Wolf, 25, of La Jolla was rushed to Scripps La Jolla Hospital but died about 7:15 a.m. Sunday, Russell said. Andrew Eagleton, 20, of Solana Beach managed to sprint out of the way of the onrushing car and avoided injury.
The driver, Rudy Martinez, 20, of Oceanside, was held on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter and felony drunken driving, Russell said.
Martinez was driving south at high speed and using the left turn lane to pass cars when he lost control of his car, Russell said. Martinez’ car first struck another vehicle, then plowed into the pedestrians.
Russell said Martinez suffered minor injuries and was treated at Scripps Hospital in Encinitas. The driver of the second car and a passenger were not injured.
