Orange County College Roundup : Fullerton Loses to Pepperdine, 5-4

Cal State Fullerton rallied in the late innings Tuesday but could not score the tying run and lost to Pepperdine, 5-4, in a nonconference baseball game at Malibu.

The Titans trailed, 5-1, entering the seventh but scored once in the seventh and twice in the eighth.

Fullerton put two runners on in the ninth, but Ken Garcia hit into a double play to end the game.

Rick Hirtensteiner homered in the sixth for the Waves, and Doug Simons went 7 innings and struck out five to gain the victory.

Garcia, Mark Razook, Tonny Trevino and Jason Rolish each had two hits for the Titans (1-4).

Cal State Los Angeles 9, UC Irvine 8--Steve Elder led off the bottom of the eighth inning with a solo home run to lift the Golden Eagles (4-4-1) over the Anteaters (3-6) at Los Angeles. John Seeburger, who hit a two-run homer in the sixth inning, went 3 for 5 with three runs batted in and two runs scored for Irvine.

UCLA 17, Chapman 5--Billy Haselman, Scott Cline and Eric Karros each had three of the Bruins’ 16 hits to lead UCLA at Orange’s Hart Park.

The Bruins scored six runs in the second inning, and Charlie Fiacco gave UCLA an 11-0 lead with a grand slam in the fourth. Jeff Conine (1-0) started for the Bruins. Panther starter Jim Bennett (0-1) lasted just 1 innings and gave up six hits and seven runs.

In men’s tennis:

Chapman 7, UC Riverside 2--The Panthers won four of six singles matches and three doubles matches in the California Collegiate Athletic Assn. win at Riverside.

Chapman (1-0, 2-1), the third-ranked team in Division II, got singles wins from Miles Walker, Paul Charlesworth, David Seline and Allen Juinio.

UCLA 7, UC Irvine 2--The Bruins, ranked third in the nation, improved to 7-0 with the victory at UCLA. The Anteaters’ No. 1 doubles team of Mark Kaplan and Trevor Kronemann defeated UCLA’s Dan Nahirney and Otis Smith, 4-6, 6-2, 6-4, and UCI’s No. 2 doubles team, Julian Barham and Richard Lubner, defeated Tim Triguerio and Buff Farrow, 6-3, 6-0. Darren Yates, who normally teams with Barham, was sidelined with tendinitis in his shoulder.
