Gardena : Church to Be Monitored

Share

After residents of Atkinson Avenue complained that construction at the Calvary Baptist Church has violated building permit conditions, the City Council voted to monitor the project more closely.

The council issued a permit last year allowing the church to enlarge an existing elementary school and to establish a junior high school on the premises.

Residents said their grievances include disregard of specified hours of construction, excessive noise from the school grounds and the unauthorized use of Atkinson Avenue for construction vehicles.

They urged the council to hold a hearing on whether to revoke the church’s building permit.

The council decided instead to get monthly reports from the city staff on the project’s compliance with permit conditions.

In addition, Councilman Mas Fukai volunteered to act as a mediator for residents and church representatives.
