Tennis Roundup : McEnroe Is Beaten by Kriek, 7-5, 6-4
Fifth-seeded John McEnroe was eliminated by 11th-seeded Johan Kriek, 7-5, 6-4, in the third round of the U.S. Indoor Championships Thursday night at Memphis, Tenn.
Kriek served 12 aces and had 46% success rate on his first serve. He said he had not played as well as he did Thursday night since last year’s French Open.
“Mentally, I can’t play any better,” he said. “I played a near-perfect match.”
McEnroe, who lost to Tim Mayotte in the final of the U.S. Pro Indoor tournament at Philadelphia last Sunday, complained of stomach problems but didn’t use it as an excuse.
Meanwhile, No. 2-seeded Jimmy Connors came back from a four-game slump in the second set to beat Eliot Teltscher, 6-1, 4-6, 6-1.
In other matches, No. 1-seeded Stefan Edberg of Sweden beat 16th-seeded Ramesh Krishnan of India, 6-3, 6-2; third-seeded Mikael Pernfors of Sweden defeated Amos Mansdorf of Israel; fourth-seeded Brad Gilbert stopped 14th-seeded Eric Jelen of West Germany; and Greg Holmes beat Sergio Casal of Spain, 6-3, 6-3.
Top-seeded Hana Mandlikova of Czechoslovakia was at her best in the first set and finished strong to beat Alycia Moulton, 6-0, 4-6, 6-3, in the second round of the $150,000 women’s tournament at San Francisco.
In other matches, third-seeded Zina Garrison defeated Peanut Louie Harper, 6-1, 6-1, and Sylvia Hanika of West Germany routed Laura Garrone of Italy, 6-0, 6-2.
