Protests Delay Action on Balboa Park Center

Share

The Los Angeles Recreation and Parks Commission Friday postponed a decision on building a $1.5-million community center in Balboa Park after homeowners testified that the center would create hardships.

Esther U’Ren, who represented Encino Community Residents, told commission members that the center would be within 85 feet of homes. U’Ren proposed that it be built no less than 585 feet away from the houses.

Commission members ordered staff members to review the residents’ suggestions, said Al Goldfarb, public information director. They will take up the matter again Feb. 27.

The 15,000-square-foot building, which would include a gymnasium and auditorium, is proposed for the southwest corner of the 80-acre park.
