Women’s Roundup : Nelson Scores 27 for Trojans in 96-57 Win

The USC women’s basketball team, led by Cherie Nelson’s 27 points, beat Arizona, 96-57, Saturday in a Pacific 10 game at the Sports Arena.

The Trojans went on a 14-4 run to break open the game, 32-22, with 4:55 left in the first half. USC (17-6 overall, 11-2 in the Pac-10) led, 46-27, at halftime.

Karon Howell added 19 points and 8 rebounds for the Trojans, ranked No. 18. Dana Patterson had 16 points and Miroslava Acosta 14 for Arizona (9-14, 3-10).

CS Long Beach 99, Pacific 46--Cindy Brown, a senior forward, scored 33 points as the sixth-ranked 49ers breezed in a Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. game at Stockton. Long Beach (22-2, 12-1) also got 18 points from sophomore guard Penny Toler. Pacific fell to 10-11, 3-9.

UCLA 88, Arizona St. 77--Guard Jaime Brown had a game-high 26 points to lead the Bruins past the Sun Devils at John Wooden Center. UCLA took a 58-48 lead with 11:38 left. Patti Peppler scored 18 points to lead the Sun Devils (9-12, 3-9). UCLA is 16-7, 9-4.

Cal Poly Pomona 67, Cal Poly SLO 43--The Broncos’ win clinched their sixth consecutive California Collegiate Athletic Assn. title. Freshman center Niki Bracken had 19 points for Pomona, ranked second in NCAA Division II. Pomona is 22-2, 9-1. San Luis Obispo is 11-14, 4-6.
