NHL Roundup : Poulin Scores Winner; Flyers Down Blues, 4-2

Dave Poulin made a name for himself this week--in Moscow and St. Louis.

Poulin scored his second goal of the game midway through the third period Saturday night to lead the Philadelphia Flyers to a 4-2 victory over the St. Louis Blues.

Poulin, who scored the winning goal in the NHL All-Stars’ 4-3 victory over the Soviet Union Wednesday night, scored his 17th goal of the season at 10:06 of the third period to break a 2-2 tie.

Ron Flockhart had tied the game for the Blues at 6:19 of the period. After Poulin’s goal, Peter Zezel added his 28th goal of the year for the Flyers at 12:08.

Poulin earlier tied the game, 1-1, at 13:21 of the second period when he flipped a shot past a screened Greg Millen. He also earned an assist on a goal by Brad McCrimmon at 16:39 that put the Flyers in front, 2-1.

Toronto 5, Boston 4--Russ Courtnall scored twice in the final 4:06, including the winning goal with 2:59 left, to push the Maple Leafs past the Bruins at Toronto,

Courtnall put Toronto in front, 4-3, at 15:54, but Boston’s Charlie Simmer tied it with his 21st goal of the season at 16:24.

The Bruins went ahead, 3-2, at 2:03 of the third period on Rick Middleton’s 16th goal of the season, and Jeff Jackson tied it for the Maple Leafs at 14:36.

Montreal 5, Winnipeg 2--Ryan Walter scored two goals in the first period, and Mats Naslund had three assists as the Canadiens downed the Jets at Montreal.

Chris Chelios, Sergio Momesso and Claude Lemieux also scored for the Canadiens, who took sole possession of second place in the Adams Division, two points ahead of Boston.

Calgary 3, Minnesota 2--Joe Mullen scored his 33rd and 34th goals of the season, including the game-winner on a penalty shot, giving the Flames a victory over the North Stars at Bloomington, Minn.

Mullen gave the Flames a 3-1 lead by beating Minnesota goalie Kari Takko at 4:29 of the third period after Calgary was awarded a penalty shot when Minnesota defenseman Bob Rouse grabbed the puck in the crease.

Larry DePalma scored both Minnesota goals on power plays.

Vancouver 3, Pittsburgh 3--Barry Pederson scored with 4:39 left in regulation to give the Canucks a tie with the Penguins at Pittsburgh.

Pederson’s goal came 1:21 after rookie Lee Giffin gave the Penguins a 3-2 lead with his first NHL goal when he deflected a shot by Mario Lemieux past Vancouver goalie Richard Brodeur.

Lemieux scored his 39th goal of the season at 6:18 of the second period and also had two assists.

Detroit 5, New Jersey 1--Gerard Gallant’s 29th goal of the season capped a three-goal surge during a two-minute stretch of the second period to power the Red Wings past the Devils at Detroit.

The victory, Detroit’s eighth in 12 games, improved the Norris Division leaders’ record to 24-24-8. New Jersey lost for the fifth time in seven games.

Buffalo 5, N.Y. Islanders 1--Lindy Ruff and Adam Creighton scored in the first three minutes and the Sabres went on to their fifth victory in six games by beating the slumping Islanders at Uniondale, N.Y.

The Sabres, who trail Quebec by nine points in the battle for the fourth and last playoff spot in the Adams Division, have a 12-9-2 record since Ted Sator took over as coach. It was Sator’s first appearance in the New York area since he was fired as coach of the Rangers in November.
