Gov. George Deukmejian has appointed Lawrence J. Mira to the Malibu Municipal Court bench, ending several months of speculation over who would succeed Judge John J. Merrick, who retired last year.
Mira, 44, was sworn in last week and will begin his duties Feb. 23. A graduate of Loyola Marymount University, Mira began his legal career as a Los Angeles County deputy district attorney in 1970, then entered private practice in 1973. He returned to the district attorney’s office in 1982 and later was assigned to the special investigations division.
He is a member of the Los Angeles County Bar Assn., the California District Attorneys Assn., the Assn. of Los Angeles County Deputy District Attorneys and the Italian American Lawyers.
Merrick was elected to the Malibu Justice Court bench in 1964. He became Malibu’s first Municipal Court judge when the judicial district was established in 1973.
The annual salary for a Municipal Court judge is $74,432.
