“Rock for Amnesty.” Various Artists. Mercury (AAD/DDD). The 10 songs here are not live recordings from last year’s historic “Conspiracy of Hope” tour marking Amnesty International’s 25th anniversary. Instead, except for three tracks, they’re previously available singles and album cuts, with the artists donating royalties to the human-rights group. Most, though--from Peter Gabriel’s chilling “Biko” to Sting’s haunting, timely new version of Billie Holiday’s “Strange Fruit”--thematically reflect Amnesty International’s efforts to free political prisoners around the world. Sound quality: very good.
