The drivers of two vans were critically injured when their vehicles collided head-on on the Foothill Freeway west of Sunland Boulevard early Monday, authorities said.

Both drivers were airlifted to Holy Cross Medical Center by Los Angeles Fire Department personnel following the 3:55 a.m. collision, said Kent Buzbee, a spokesman for the California Highway Patrol. They were listed in critical condition, hospital officials said.

One of the drivers, identified as Alex Calzada, 51, of Sylmar, was eastbound on the freeway in a Department of Water and Power van when he was struck by a van traveling on the wrong side of the freeway, Buzbee said.
