College Basketball Roundup : Indiana Escapes in Third Overtime

Dean Garrett hit a follow shot with four seconds left in the third overtime as second-ranked Indiana escaped with an 86-85 Big Ten victory over Wisconsin Monday night at Madison, Wis.

Garrett, who led all scorers with 21 points, grabbed a rebound off a missed shot by Joe Hillman and put it in off the backboard.

J.J. Weber scored 20 points for Wisconsin before fouling out in the second overtime. Mike Heineman also had 20 points for the Badgers.

Steve Alford scored 13 points to become the Indiana’s all-time leading scorer, surpassing Don Schlundt.

The Hoosiers, given a run last week by Northwestern before winning, 77-75, improved their record to 21-2, 12-1 in the conference. Wisconsin dropped to 11-15, 1-12.

Trent Jackson, who scored 18 points for the Badgers, hit a jumper from the corner to give Wisconsin a 83-82 lead with 1:39 left in the third overtime. After a charging foul on Garrett, Rod Ripley made two free throws to extend the lead to 85-82 with 48 seconds left.

Keith Smart, who scored 15 points, hit two free throws with 37 seconds left to bring Indiana within 85-84. Shelton Smith missed two free throws with 26 seconds left, setting up Garrett’s shot.

Temple 84, Duquesne 56--Nate Blackwell scored 24 points and Ramon Rivas had 14 points and 11 rebounds as the fifth-ranked Owls ran their winning streak to 13 games in an Atlantic 10 Conference matchup at Philadelphia.

The Owls scored 17 consecutive points late in the first half to build a 44-23 halftime lead, then cruised to their 24th victory in their last 25 games to clinch a tie for the Atlantic 10 regular-season title.

The Owls are 26-2 and 15-0; Duquesne fell to 11-14, 7-9.

Syracuse 96, Villanova 82--Sophomore Sherman Douglas scored 25 points and Rony Seikaly and Derrick Coleman had 20 each as the ninth-ranked Orangemen overcame a 15-point deficit early in the second half to win a Big East game at Philadelphia.

Syracuse (21-4) improved its to 9-3 in the conference, one game behind Pittsburgh.

Doug West scored 21 and Harold Jensen 19 for Villanova, which dropped to 14-10 and 6-7.

Villanova outscored Syracuse, 7-2, at the start of the second half to take a 55-40 lead. But Syracuse, led by Douglas’ 18 second-half points, rallied to finally move ahead, 74-73, with 5:39 left.

Once Syracuse got the lead on a pair of free throws by Douglas, the Orangemen outscored the Wildcats, 22-9, the rest of the way.

Utah State 85, Pacific 61--Guard Kevin Nixon scored 19 points and Reid Newey and Jeff Anderson each added 13 as the Aggies held the Tigers scoreless for a 5:25 period of the second half and pulled a way to win a Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. game at Logan, Utah.

With the victory, the Aggies (13-13, 7-7) moved to a four-way tie for second place in the PCAA with Cal State Long Beach, New Mexico State and San Jose State. Pacific is 10-14,6-9.

Notre Dame 74, Wagner 54--Donald Royal and Scott Hicks each scored 16 points, leading four players in double figures, as the Irish won at South Bend, Ind.

The Irish (15-7) capitalized on Wagner’s poor shooting and outrebounded the Seahawks, 37-25, to pull away steadily in the second half. Wagner (12-10) shot just 38% from the floor, while Notre Dame made 52% of its shots.

DePaul 88, Monmouth 53--Terence Greene and Kevin Edwards each scored 18 points as the fourth-ranked Blue Demons (23-1) bombed Monmouth (7-15) at Rosemont, Ill. It was the seventh straight win for the Blue Demons.

W. Kentucky 87, Jacksonville 74--Tellis Frank scored 27 points and sparked a second-half run at Bowling Green, Ky., that carried the Hilltoppers to their first-ever Sun Belt Conference regular-season championship.

The victory improved Western Kentucky’s record to 24-6, 12-1. Jacksonville fell to 16-9, 10-3.
