The Jamestown gold mine of the Sonora Mining Corp. has reopened after being closed Jan. 16 by a fire that resulted in moderate respiratory injuries to 31 people. The Tuolomne County Board of Supervisors approved the mine’s reopening after being assured that a full-time safety monitor will be hired. County fire officials said the firm has complied with requirements related to chemical hazards and has promised to fill any gaps in its insurance coverage. The $200,000 fire, two days after the first shipment of gold-bearing ore to a Nevada processing plant, ignited chemicals and sent up a toxic cloud.
