Iowa State, playing the type of game that allowed the Cyclones to go 13-0 at home during the 1985-86 season, upset 15th-ranked Kansas, 95-86, Tuesday night in a Big Eight game at Ames, Iowa.

“My guys really played super. That’s the first time I’ve seen ‘em play like they did last year,” said Iowa State Coach Johnny Orr, who is 4-0 against Kansas Coach Larry Brown at Hilton Coliseum.

“They really had intensity, they really went after it. It was a great win on our part. If we could just get that going every game like that, we could beat anybody.”

Jeff Grayer scored 26 points and Tom Schafer added 25 to lead Iowa State, which had lost six of its previous seven games. The victory over the Big Eight leader came only three days after the Cyclones had lost to last-place Colorado.

Orr credited his team’s 3-2 zone defense for helping keep Kansas star Danny Manning in check. Although Manning scored 30 points, Orr said the 6-foot-11 junior had to work hard to get them.

“He earned everything he got tonight, no question about that,” Orr said. “We stuck with our thing right from the beginning, and fortunately, our offense was good enough that we could stay with our defense.”

Brown, whose team had beaten Iowa State, 72-48, in Lawrence, Kan., last month, said the Jayhawks got into a running game with the Cyclones and that’s not their style.

“We shot the ball poorly,” Brown said. “We’re not a perimeter shooting team. We got caught up in the pace of the game and took a lot of quick outside shots.”

Sam Hill added 20 points and Elmer Robinson 14 for Iowa State, 12-12 overall and 4-7 in the Big Eight. Kansas is 19-7 and 8-3.

The Cyclones never trailed after scoring eight straight points for a 12-9 lead five minutes into the game.

Providence 91, Seton Hall 87--Billy Donovan led the No. 19 Friars with 23 points, 10 assists and 5 free throws in the final 25 seconds.

Donovan also played the last 10 minutes of the Big East game at Providence, R.I., with a bloody nose.

“We couldn’t stop the bleeding,” Providence Coach Rick Pitino said. “But he never came out. He played a gutsy game.”

Seton Hall had pulled to within a point before Donovan began his string of free throws.

Senior Ernie Lewis added 20 points for the Friars (18-5, 8-4). Seton Hall is 14-10 and 3-10.

Kansas State 81, Oklahoma State 60--Norris Coleman scored 22 points and Mitch Richmond added 20 as the Wildcats rolled to a Big Eight victory at Manhattan, Kan.
