Cal State Long Beach Ends Bruin Win Streak
It took 4 1/2 hours, but the Cal State Long Beach men’s tennis team accomplished something Tuesday in Westwood that hadn’t been done since 1984. The 49ers defeated UCLA, 5-4, to snap the Bruins’ home dual match winning streak at 49.
The match was tied, 4-4, at the end of the second doubles. When Patrick Galbraith and Brian Garrow took a 4-1 lead in the final set of the third doubles, it appeared that UCLA would extend its streak to 50. But Long Beach’s No. 1 doubles team of Pat Crow and Kevin Gillette won six of the next seven games to win the set, 7-5.
The win also was the first for Long Beach in 12 matches against UCLA. It was the first loss of the season for the Bruins after eight wins. The 49ers are 7-1. Their only loss was to USC, 5-4.
