Rancho P.V. : Lobbying Effort OKd

The City Council has approved spending up to $10,000 for lobbyists to ask Congress and the Army Corps of Engineers to fund a study of measures to halt shoreline erosion caused by the Portuguese Bend landslide.

Last year Congress passed legislation authorizing the corps to study various methods of containing the erosion but failed to authorize any money.

“We need to get the Army Corps of Engineers moving,” Mayor Melvin Hughes said.

Two years ago, lobbying efforts by council members and city staff won the city a $2-million grant from the state to stabilize the slide, but Hughes said it is unlikely that city officials alone could successfully lobby the federal government.
