La Cienega Water Plant Receives Temporary Reprieve
The La Cienega Water Treatment Plant was temporarily spared the wreaking ball Tuesday by the Beverly Hills City Council, which agreed to wait until March 3 before accepting a bid to demolish the 59-year-old structure to expand La Cienega Park.
The council, however, denied a request by preservationists to overrule a decision by the city Environmental Review Board, which said that razing the vacant building would have no adverse environmental impact on the community.
The preservationists, including the Los Angeles Conservancy, say the building should be spared because it is historically significant. But city building and engineering officials have reported that the plant, at 333 S. La Cienega Blvd., is unsafe and that the cost of renovation would be prohibitive.
The city has received a low bid of $320,500 from Flat & Vertical Inc. of Anaheim to tear down the building.
