Santa Ana : Deputy Pleads Not Guilty in Shooting of Brother

An Orange County Sheriff’s deputy fired this week after being charged with fatally shooting his brother pleaded not guilty Friday at his Municipal Court arraignment.

Donald W. McKay, 25, had been charged with involuntary manslaughter in the Jan. 16 death of his brother John.

Municipal Judge C. Robert Jameson ordered a preliminary hearing for March 27.

Mckay was fired late Thursday, according to Lt. Dick Olson, because the filing of charges involving such a serious offense violated McKay’s one-year probationery term as a Sheriff’s Department employee.

McKay was hired last summer and was assigned to the James A. Musick Honor Farm near El Toro.

According to court documents, McKay shot his brother with a .38-caliber service revolver at his Capistrano Beach apartment while demonstrating how the weapon worked.
