The Dallas Mavericks played without starting point guard Derek Harper again Friday night, but this time Mark Aguirre picked up the slack.

Aguirre scored a season-high 41 points as the Mavericks beat the San Antonio Spurs, 122-107, at Dallas.

San Antonio Coach Bob Weiss said: “There was certainly a lot of Mark Aguirre out there tonight. It doesn’t matter who’s guarding him when he is as hot as he was tonight. No one in the league can stop him when he’s on his game.”

Harper had also missed playing against the Celtics the night before because of an infected foot. But the Mavericks lost that game by 17 points.

Aguirre, who had his third 40-point game of the year, said the Mavericks did not let the defeat get them down. “I’m glad there wasn’t a lot of panic,” he said. “We went out and did what we usually do and won. I’m glad we didn’t go out and play out of character.”

Harper also will miss tonight’s home game against the Golden State Warriors. Guard Brad Davis, who scored 11 points and had 7 assists, started in his place Friday night and played 34 minutes.

Sam Perkins added 25 points for the Mavericks while pulling down a season-high 18 rebounds.

Guard Jon Sundvold scored 24 points to lead the Spurs, who lost for the fifth time in six games since the All-Star break.

Philadelphia 123, Sacramento 91--The 76ers coasted to an embarrassingly easy victory over the Kings after taking a 102-60 lead early in the fourth quarter at Philadelphia. Andrew Toney scored a season-high 32 points for the 76ers, and Charles Barkley added 18 points and grabbed 17 rebounds.

Maurice Cheeks and Roy Hinson added 17 points each for the 76ers, who won their third straight.

The victory margin was the largest of the season for the 76ers. The previous best was a 121-95 victory over New Jersey Feb. 4.

Sacramento, which is 4-20 on the road this season and has lost 8 of its last 11 games, got 22 points from Reggie Theus and 20 from Otis Thorpe.

Indiana 107, Atlanta 105--Steve Stipanovich, who hasn’t been pleased with his offensive output in recent games, made up for it by scoring a season-high 30 points, including two free throws with 21 seconds left that gave the Pacers their first road victory against the Hawks since March 26, 1981.

The Pacers had lost 16 consecutive road games against the Hawks, 15 in the Omni in Atlanta and one in New Orleans.

Stipanovich’s free throws gave the Pacers a 106-105 lead and Vern Fleming added another with 11 seconds to play after a turnover by Atlanta’s Dominique Wilkins as he was spinning around to attempt a shot. Glenn Rivers missed a 10-footer in the closing seconds and Atlanta failed on two subsequent tip-in attempts.

Washington 118, Utah 113--Moses Malone scored 35 points and Jeff Malone had 29 as the Bullets held off a fourth-quarter rally by the Jazz at Salt Lake City.

The Jazz pulled within 115-113 on a pair of free throws by Karl Malone with 43 seconds to play, but Ennis Whatley sank a short jumper with 24 seconds left to put the game away. Jeff Malone added a free throw.
