Frank Spates doubled in two runs, and pitchers Craig Brink and Mitch Parrott shut down USC’s hitters as UC Irvine upset the Trojans, 2-1, Friday in a men’s nonconference baseball game at Irvine.

Jeff Oberdank walked to open the fifth inning for the Anteaters (6-7), and one out later, Mike Fay walked against losing pitcher Darrin Berr. Spates followed with a double off the left-field fence.

Brink, who pitched eight innings, gave up a leadoff triple to Terri Brown of USC (8-4) in the ninth and was replaced by Parrott. Parrott got Jim Campanis to ground to third baseman Mike Sugar, who threw Brown out at the plate. Parrott got the final two outs and recorded his second save of season.
