A 24-year-old Anaheim woman was hit by a car and fatally injured Sunday night as she tried to run across four lanes of fast-moving traffic along Ball Road, a California Highway Patrol spokesman said.

The accident occurred about 8 p.m. just east of Auto Center Drive, Officer Craig Speck said. Investigators Monday said they did not know why the woman decided to try to cross Ball Road in heavy traffic. She had nearly made it when she was struck by a car in the westbound lanes of Ball, Speck said.

The woman, identified as Penny Christine Polito, was treated at the scene by Anaheim Fire Department paramedics and taken to UCI Medical Center where she was pronounced dead. The motorist who hit her was not cited, Speck said.
