Cypress College Classes Canceled After Explosion, Fire Cut Power
Secretaries at Cypress College on Monday worked by flashlight and 13,500 students got the day off as the Orange County school remained dark following a power outage Sunday.
But power--and classes--were scheduled to resume today.
At about 1 p.m. Sunday, a fire and explosion occurred on the southwest corner of the community college’s campus in an underground tunnel that houses cables, college officials said. No one was injured and the fire was extinguished quickly.
The explosion blew a manhole cover off, singed nearby bushes and destroyed 400 feet of underground cable, said college President Jack Scott. He said the cause of the fire was not known.
Officials were stationed at all entrances to the campus at 6:45 a.m. Monday to tell arriving students and instructors that classes were canceled.
