The Continental Basketball Assn. announced a program that will enable players disqualified from playing in the National Basketball Assn. because of drug use to play in the CBA.

The CBA said it was anticipated that Mitchell Wiggins, former Houston Rocket guard who recently was suspended from the NBA for drug use, will apply to play in the CBA.

The CBA said that under the program--which was put together in conjunction with the NBA and the NBA Players Assn.--a player banned from the NBA but who has completed in-patient treatment with that league’s drug counselors, would be reevaluated by the counselors.

If the counselors are satisfied that the player is drug free, they will prescribe an after-care program for the player, the CBA said. The player’s status then will be reviewed by CBA Commissioner Carl Scheer, who will interview the player.

The commissioner will decide whether the player will be permitted to play in the CBA.

If the player fails to comply with his after-care program or if he tests positive once, he will be disqualified from playing in the CBA.
