Orange County College Roundup : San Francisco State Breaks Tie in 8th, Defeats Chapman, 6-5

San Francisco State scored a run in the eighth inning to break a 5-5 tie and defeated Chapman, 6-5, in a nonconference baseball game at Hart Park in Orange.

The score was tied, 3-3, in the seventh until designated hitter Jim Domhoff hit a two-run homer with two out to give San Francisco State (1-4) a 5-3 lead off losing pitcher Jim Bennett (1-3).

The Panthers (5-6) followed with two runs in the seventh. Darren Nelson doubled to drive in Brian Beals and Chris Cutliff singled to bring Nelson home and tie the score.

Grand Canyon College 6, Southern California 5--The Vanguards had the bases loaded in the bottom of the eighth but could not get the tying run across. Grand Canyon, the defending NAIA champion, had broken a 3-3 tie with three runs in the top of the eighth.

Steve Overeem was 3 for 4 with an RBI, Jeff Motekse 2 for 4 and Mike Lomeli 2 for 4 for Southern California.

In women’s gymnastics:

Utah 188.05, Cal State Fullerton 183.90--Kris Takahashi took firsts in the floor exercise (9.6) and uneven bars (9.6) and won the all-round (37.80) to lead six-time defending national champion Utah to the victory at Salt Lake City.

Cal State Fullerton’s Tami Elliott (37.75) was second in the all-round and Callie Glanton (37.15) was third.

Utah is 7-1. Fullerton is 2-7.

In women’s nonconference tennis:

Las Vegas 5, UC Irvine 4--The Rebels’ doubles team of Jolene Watanabe and Kristin Hess defeated Stephanie Rhorer and Dina Trenwith, 3-6, 7-6, 6-2, in the final match.

Uma Rao, Courtny Weichsel and Debbie Strombeck won in singles for the Anteaters (4-9); the doubles team of Weichsel and Strombeck also won.
